The 2004 Carling Cup Final was played between Bolton Wanderers and Middlesbrough. Middlesbrough won the game 2-1 to clinch their first major trophy. Joseph-Désiré Job's second minute goal was the fastest ever scored in a League Cup final, but this record would be broken a year later by Liverpool's John Arne Riise. 5 minutes later, Middlesbrough won a penalty after Job was tripped in the box. Zenden stepped up to take the kick and was in the end fortunate to beat Jääskeläinen as he slipped while about to kick and as a result the ball went straight at the keeper but Jääskeläinen had dived to his left and the ball sailed in. Davies pulled one back for Bolton on 21 minutes but it wasn't enough and Boro were able to celebrate when the final whistle blew.
It remains the only League Cup final ever to have been played on the 29th February.
