Gareth Southgate selected a youthful Middlesbrough side and watched as they cruised to a 5-0 victory at Darlington.
Adam Johnson was the star of the show for the Premier League side, as he scored the first and last goals at the Darlington Arena.
Johnson opened the scoring from the penalty spot just before the half hour when he picked himself up after being brought down in the box to casually beat goalkeeper Przemyslaw Kazimierczak.
Marvin Emnes then doubled Boro's lead before the break as his clever turn and shot left Kazimierczak with no chance after a quickly taken corner.
Johnson was involved again for the third goal as his corner from the right was turned into his own net by the unfortunate Lewis Hardman.
Tony McMahon added a fourth in the 69th minute following a scramble in the six-yard box with Southgate's side now in complete control.
And Johnson sealed the rout as he broke free down the left and drilled a shot across Kazimierczak and into the net.
Dave Penney will now have to lift his Darlington side ahead of their opening League Two fixture at home to Exeter on Saturday.
