Barnes, who joined the club in 1998 under Bryan Robson's management, is the latest member of the club's backroom staff to leave since the club's relegation, following the departures of assistant manager Malcolm Crosby, Frank Nuttall and sports psychologist Michael Caulfield.
Chief Executive Keith Lamb said: "We're grateful for all the work Chris carried out for the club over the past 11 years and wish him well in his future career. We are rearranging the backroom team and handling the fitness elements in a different way as we plan for what will hopefully be just the one season in the Championship."
